1. Specification for the pre-treatment, powder organic coating and stoving of metal piece parts.

1 .2 This specification states the requirements for all items which require Powder Organic coating (Powder Coating).

 
2.0 PRE-TREATMENT

Pre-treatment refers to the treatment of metal surfaces, after cleaning and prior to applying the final finish, to retard corrosion of the base metal.

2.1 Aluminium Alloy Castings

Aluminium castings are treated with a '9' stage Chromate Conversion, as recommended by the chemical manufacturer.

Mild steel piece parts will be pre-treated in accordance with SABS 064 Code of Practice for the Preparation of Steel Surfaces for Coating. Section 5 para. 54. Table 2 Hot Phosphate

2.4 Mild Steel Piece Parts (Electrophoretic Painting)

All mild steel piece parts which have been Electrophoretic Painted (E Coated) will be in accordance with specifications and cleaned of any form of contamination before powder coating.

The cleaning method used will not be detrimental to the E Coat or to the end product.

2.5 3 CR 12 Stainless Steel Parts

3 CR 1 2 Stainless steel parts will be pre-treated in accordance with the following processes:

3.0 POWDER ORGANIC COATING

3.1 Components and Test Panels Pre-treatment will be carried out as stated in Section 2 and the powder coating shall comply with the following requirements as agreed to in the form of master samples.

3.2 Surface Appearance The finish will not show any pinholes, craters, fish eyes, loss of gloss, stars or buttons, orange peel, powder contamination, striped pattern, runs, blisters or scratches.

3.3 Colour, Texture and Gloss The finish will be inspected once per shift using the master samples supplied.

3.4 Thickness : Will be checked on every twentieth completed item with a minimum of three determinations and a maximum of five determinations using calibrated equipment.

3.5 Adhesion : Will be tested once every job lot received prior to despatch, using the Cross Hatch Method of SABS 159 (this test will be carried out on test pieces only)

3.6 Every component will contain Jondec's identity label or stamp and date of production.

5.0 POWDER STORAGE

We have an enclosed Powder Store which is operated by a stock recording system and all powders are stored at 25 degrees C or less.

8.0 THE POWDER MANUFACTERER

The tests associated with these requirements must be carried out by the manufacturer of the powder organic coating on each new batch only (not each (delivery).

9.0 POWDER ORGANIC COATING

9.1 Master samples

9.1 Master samples will be issued by Ferro and / or client

9.1.2 The master samples will be approved and signed by customer

9.1.3 The master samples will be made up of three panels 'A', 'B', and 'C'

Panel A will be the lower thickness limit of 80 microns
Panel B will be the nominal of 100 microns
Panel C will be the upper limit of 120 microns

Each panel will contain the following information:

  • Panel description A, B, or C
  • Ferro description code
  • Customer's signature
  • Date of issue
 

10.0 POWDER MANUFACTURES CERTIFICATE

10.1 The powder manufacturer will issue a certificate stating that the powder organic coating complies with the requirements of para. 8. 1.

This certificate will relate to the original coating formulation and a new certificate must be issued for each batch manufactured to this formulation.

 

11.0 IDENTIFICATION OF ORGANIC POWDER

  • Date of manufacture
